The rubber seal of a washing machine is particularly vulnerable to mould and if left untreated, black mould can eat away at the rubber seal and deteriorate.

Over time, a buildup of mould can even cause a washing machine to leak, resulting in costly repairs.

While households probably already clean their washing machine drum and drawer, they may have forgotten about the seal that runs around the frame or the door.

These airtight seals collect moisture and, because they are designed to keep soapy water locked inside, they don’t naturally dry when the door is closed.

To prevent preserve the working life of a washing machine door seal and prevent a smelly washing machine, always keep it free from black mould.

Thankfully, Mrs Hinch fans have shared how this can be done after one woman was on the lookout for some advice.

Posting a picture of her washing machine seal full of brow licked and black mould to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Stephanie Atkinson asked: “Any suggestions on how to clean the rubber seal in the washing machine?”

A suggestion from group members that kept cropping up was to use Astonish’s Mould and Mildew Blaster spray.

Amy Harris said: “My washing machine had mould around the seal and smelt awful. I was going to replace it but bought the Astonish mould spray as a last resort.

“Left it on the seal for a few minutes and it worked a treat. Back to normal colour and no smell at all.”

Sammy Grossman commented: “Definitely Astonish Mould and Mildew - it’s brilliant stuff. You just need to leave it to sit then wipe it all down.”

Carla Marshall said: “Easiest way is to use the Astonish mould spray. Spray it inside the seal then pack the seal with the kitchen roll and spray it until the kitchen roll is soaked.

“Leave it to sit for 30 minutes and the very stubborn mould should have disappeared. Run your washing machine empty to rinse and should be good to go.”

Julie Searle wrote: “I soaked kitchen roll with Astonish mould cleaner. I put it around the seal. Left overnight and was gone.”
